The amount of medical waste being generated in the central Chinese city of Wuhan has almost doubled since January 2020, soon after the Covid-19 outbreak started in the area. The capital of Hubei province now collects about 100 tonnes of waste per day daily, according to the Wuhan’s Radioactive and Hazardous Solid Waste Pollution Prevention and Management Centre. Local companies that specialise in handling medical waste have been helping to process discarded materials, following strict protocol to avoid exposing workers to the deadly coronavirus that causes the disease.
