Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich was detained for two months by a Moscow court on espionage charges on March 30, 2023. Russia’s Federal Security Service confirmed the 31-year-old journalist had been detained for attempting to obtain classified information on Russia’s “military-industrial complex”. International media watchdog Reporters Without Borders said Gershkovich had been investigating the Wagner Group, a mercenary force that has played a central role in the war that started with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Gershkovich is believed to be the first reporter charged with espionage in post-Soviet Russia, where the crime is punishable by up to 20 years in prison.
