Nha Vy is one of hundreds of LGBT performers in Vietnam earning a living through ‘lotto’ shows. This form of entertainment dates back to the French colonial era and is now popular in the south of the country. Like many LGBT people in Vietnam, she has faced discrimination for much of her life despite gradual changes in social attitudes. Vietnam is seen as relatively progressive, having lifted a ban on same-sex marriage in 2015, however the government still does not give full legal recognition to same-sex unions. According to a Human Rights Watch report published in 2020, misinformation about sexual orientation and gender identity in schools is still rife and some children are taught by both teachers and parents that homosexuality is a mental illness.
