The US House of Representatives passed the Uygur Human Rights Policy Act on May 27, 2020. The legislation calls for sanctions against Chinese officials accused of abusing human rights in the treatment of Uygurs and other Muslim minority groups in the China’s northwest. The United Nations estimates that around one million people in the Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region (XUAR) are being held in “re-education camps”, which China says are aimed at wiping out religious extremism. The bill now awaits approval by US President Donald Trump.
