Taiwan on February 20, 2024, drove away a mainland Chinese coastguard ship that entered waters near its sensitive frontline islands. The tense exchange came a day after mainland coastguard officials briefly boarded a Taiwanese cruise ship, according to Taipei. Beijing had said it would step up patrols, following a speedboat chase by the Taiwan coastguard on February 14 that ended in two mainland fishermen drowning.
