China’s official media has significantly increased its use of the term “Xizang” instead of “Tibet” when referencing the autonomous region. According to a report in the South China Morning Post, “Xizang” is the pinyin, or Chinese romanization, of the Mandarin script for “Tibet.” A white paper on Tibet, released by China’s cabinet, outlines developments in Tibet since President Xi Jinping assumed power in 2012. Despite occupying Tibet for over 60 years, China has refused negotiations with Tibetan leaders since 2010. This situation holds serious security implications for India, particularly as China refers to Arunachal Pradesh as “Zangnan,” according to experts.
