Thailand’s Pheu Thai party announced on August 2, 2023, that it will break its alliance with the Move Forward Party (MFP) and nominate Srettha Thavisin as the next prime minister. The surprise winner in the country’s May general election in May, the MFP encountered resistance from military and pro-royalist senators, leaving Thailand in a prolonged political deadlock. Its leader Pita Limjaroenrat was barred by parliament from running for prime minister. The Thai Parliament said the next vote to pick the country’s next leader will take place on August 4, but the schedule remains uncertain.
