A tree trunk that is considered a sacred source of good fortune has been drawing attention and offerings from people in central Thailand. The wood from a Hopea odorata tree was found in a swamp in the central province of Ang Thong and estimated to be around 100 years old. The 12.5-metre (41-foot) trunk is frequently covered with gold leaf and amulets, and has become a destination for Thai folk dancers and others who seek blessings and good luck. Local folklore says that Hopea odorata are inhabited by “Nang Ta-khian”, a beautiful young female tree spirit who is believed to bestow good fortune on those who make offerings to her “homes”.
