The President of Suriname has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for political murders.
Desi Bouterse was convicted of killing 15 opponents after taking power in a coup in 1982.
The court ruled Bouterse oversaw an operation to have them abducted and killed.
He is currently out of the country on an official trip to China.
The military court that found him guilty on Friday has not ordered his arrest and he can appeal the sentence.
Rosemarijn Hofte, a professor of the History of Suriname at the University of Amsterdam, talks to Al Jazeera about the development.
