The Supreme Court stepped in today to order the release on bail of Journalist Prashant Kanojia who was arrested by the UP police for tweeting offensive videos. One of the videos showed a woman making allegations against UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. Two other journalists have also been arrested for similar social media posts. This is not the first time an over enthusiastic state police has moved to detain citizens whose social media comments have hurt fragile egos of their political bosses.. right before the Lok Sabha elections, a BJP worker called Priyanka Sharma was arrested by the West Bengal police for retweeting a meme that mocked the Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.. In fact, there are numerous cases where laws have been invoked to clamp down on citizens by governments of all political hue.. How can ordinary citizens make sure their freedom of expression is protected.. But the deeper debate is.. how can a balance be maintained between the right to say what you think.. and making offensive statements that can truly disturb law and order..to speak more on this I’m joined by Justice Asok Kumar Ganguly, Former Judge, Supreme Court of India, Akriti Bopanna, Policy Officer, Centre for Internet Society, & Ameen Jauhar, Senior Resident Fellow, Vidhi Centre for Legal Policy.

In today’s episode “We are living in a republic; we have a constitution which gives us right. I agree all rights are relative, it’s not absolute. Unless there is a law you cannot say it can be curtailed” – Justice Ashok Kumar Ganguly

“A lot of these charges are politically motivated. The charges are not related to the act himself”- Akriti Bopanna, Policy Officer, Centre for Internet Society

“We need to think of a broader legislative framework. The protection is fundamentally enshrined in the constitution”- Ameen Jauhar, Senior Resident Fellow, Vidhi Centre for Legal Policy
