Sri Lanka villagers stormed the government office of divisional secretary Manjari Chandradasa on May 16, 2023, one day after their fields near a wildlife reserve were ravaged by a herd of up to 50 elephants. Local villagers said nearly half their crops across seven villages were ruined. Chandradasa announced that the government will start driving out the elephant herd from May 22 and send them back to the Wilpattu National Park.
