A Russian man sentenced to two years in a penal colony on March 28, 2023, over an anti-war picture his daughter drew in school has reportedly fled house arrest. Alexei Moskalyov was found guilty of discrediting the armed forces, an offence Russia introduced soon after its February 2022 invasion of Ukraine. After a nearly year-long investigation, Moskalyov was placed on house arrest and his daughter was sent to a children’s home south of Moscow in early March 2023. Their separation sparked a public outcry in Russia and an online campaign to reunite the family.
