A powerful earthquake struck central Japan on January 1, 2024. The 7.6 magnitude quake triggered a tsunami warning, as over one metre waves hit the coast of Wajima city in Ishikawa prefecture. High speed rail services to Ishikawa have been suspended while power and internet services have been disrupted in Ishikawa and Niigata.
In an emergency press conference, a Japanese official said checks are still under way to look into the extent of the quake damage, but so far “no irregularities” have been reported at Japan’s nuclear plants. Authorities also warned of possible further quakes and urged residents to evacuate from coastal areas as soon as possible.
