It has been more than a week now since PM Narendra Modi’s massive election victory – a victory that has seen the BJP grow in strength, despite a patchy economic record, and social tensions which continue to be a concern. This was an election that saw the BJP emerge as the most preferred party among first-time young voters and also the most preferred party among youth cutting across different castes. Yet, there was much shock in the opposition and among India’s liberals at the poll results. Many believe PM Modi’s success represents a new, aspirational India, which is speaking out against the old, entitled culture that the Congress had come to represent. It has happened not just in India, but all over the world, which has taken a turn to the right – from Donald Trump to Brexit to the recent EU elections. PM Modi stirred up the debate further by talking about the Khan Market gang – a reference to Delhi’s elite. Is it fair to say liberals in India too have been living in echo chambers or is liberal bashing misplaced?
