Journalist Maria Ressa was found guilty of cyber libel by a Philippine court on June 15, 2020. The 56-year-old is the founder of online news site Rappler, known for its tough scrutiny of Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte. Her case dates back to a 2012 article that linked a businessman to human trafficking and illegal drugs.Ressa has denied any wrongdoing, and watchdog groups say the case is aimed at silencing critics of the president. She and her co-accused, former researcher-writer Reynaldo Santos Jnr, face up to six years in jail and have been allowed to post bail, pending an appeal.
