New Zealand has begun the clean-up after the country’s most catastrophic weather event of the century which claimed the lives of five people in flooding and landslips – while East Coast residents were left isolated from food, water, fuel and power.

Cyclone Gabrielle has left at least 15,000 people displaced, and 144,000 properties remain without power while police continue their search for several missing people.
