Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s NDA government has been picked to lead India again by many of the hundreds of millions who voted in the hotly contested, six-week-long Lok Sabha election, results and leads from vote counts show.

If the current numbers hold, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will win a parliamentary majority on its own in a 545-strong Lok Sabha with two nominated members — just as it did in 2014.

The BJP alone has leads or wins in 300-odd seats, although counting trends fluctuate. The last time a single party pulled off back-to-back majorities was in 1984, when Rajiv Gandhi’s Congress won more than 400 seats in an election held soon after Indira Gandhi’s assassination.

Across India, the BJP began celebrating well before Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared victory in the afternoon. His tweet evoked his own jubilant words after winning in 2014 — “India wins yet again!” he said.

Voters “have clearly given their decision today”, said Rahul Gandhi, the Congress president, as he congratulated Modi on Thursday evening. He also conceded the election in Amethi, which he has represented for 15 years, to Smriti Irani.
