Minority Leader of US House of Representatives Kevin McCarthy has, after six different voting attempts, still failed to own a majority as the House elects its speaker.

Washington Correspondent Annelise Nielsen joins Sky News Australia to discuss the history being made in the US House of Representatives.

“There is a group of around 20 within the Republicans driven by five influential among the far-right, they are the ones who simply don’t like Kevin McCarthy,” Ms Nielsen said.

“This is historic. The last time we had such a dragged-out race for the Speaker of the House was in the 1920’s.”

The House has now adjourned for the evening, despite the protest from the Democrats who want to move past this as quickly as possible.
