Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jnr says granting the US access to nine of its military bases can be “useful” in case an invasion of Taiwan occurs. Speaking on May 4, 2023, Marcos said protecting Filipino nationals in Taiwan is of “primordial importance” while the US and the Philippines seek to strengthen their military cooperation amid rising tensions over Taiwan and the South China Sea. Beijing is strongly opposed to countries using bilateral treaties “as an excuse to meddle in the region”.
