Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jnr said he was prepared to work with Beijing on challenges in the South China Sea through formal channels. In remarks from the sidelines of the Asean-Australia Special Summit in Australia on March 4, 2024, Marcos Jnr also vowed that the Philippines would not surrender “a square inch” of its maritime sovereignty. He said Manila was determined to make its “bilateral mechanisms with China work”. The Philippines is among several countries embroiled in territorial conflicts with China over parts of the South China Sea, with Manila accusing Beijing of acting aggressively inside disputed boundaries. In his speech, the Philippine leader stressed that Asean nations should not be seen as geopolitical pawns in the US-China rivalry.
