Malaysia was plunged into political chaos on February 24, 2020 after Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad submitted his resignation and his Bersatu party quit the ruling Pakatan Harapan coalition. It followed reports that members of the coalition were trying to bring it down from within and form a new government, because they wanted to prevent prime minister-in-waiting Anwar Ibrahim from succeeding Mahathir.
