Volunteers with Malaysian charity GEMA have been redistributing food from Ramadan bazaars that might otherwise be wasted to low-income citizens during the holy month. As of April 14, 2023, GEMA says that it has recovered around 23 tonnes of food waste from about 55 operating Ramadan bazaars across the country. The massive bazaars pop up during Ramadan each year, drawing large crowds looking to break fast at sunset. But unsold food from the bazaars has led to a spike in food waste during the holy month each year, an issue government officials say has worsened in recent years.
