The International Consortium of Investigative Journalists (ICIJ) has released what it says are state documents describing the repressive inner workings of China’s detention camps in Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region. The release on November 24, 2019, was the second rare leak in several days of reportedly classified files concerning the centres in China’s troubled western region. United Nations experts and activists say at least 1 million Uygurs and members of other largely Muslim minority groups have been detained in camps in Xinjiang. China said the “so-called leaked documents” are pure fabrication.
