North Korea fired two short-range ballistic missiles into waters off its east coast on October 9, 2022, just hours after the US and South Korea wrapped up joint naval drills which involved the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan. State media KCNA called the missile launch an “unavoidable response” to the joint military exercise, which it said had escalated regional tensions. The launch was the seventh in two weeks.
