On The Urban Debate With Faye D’Souza tonight, The Delhi government has announced free public transport to all women in the Capital. While making the announcement, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal said that the move would empower women to work and study and would encourage public transport as well which is considered to be the safest. He also added that the scheme would cost the government around 700-800 crore rupees. Arvind Kejriwal also mentioned that he did not need the Centre’s approval for the same. This announcement has sparked off a massive row Politicians across party lines are calling it a cheap stunt to buy votes just ahead of the assembly elections in Delhi. Some women activists have slammed the move saying that women in Delhi want dignity not doles.

We ask -How is offering free bus and metro tickets to women necessarily going to guarantee safety? Can Arvind Kejriwal explain how he will procure funds for his scheme that is seen by many as blatant appeasement? How does Arvind Kejriwal ensure the safety of women by offering them a free ride in Metros? Did Lok Sabha poll rout prompt Arvind Kejriwal to announce urban sop in form of a free metro ride to women in Delhi? If the AAP was truly committed towards women’s empowerment, why did it field only one female candidate in Delhi in the 2019 polls? Is offering metro and bus rides for free to all women not patronizing towards women who have paid metro fares for over 17 years? If the primary purpose of this proposal by AAP is to ensure women’s safety, why is it being put into action four and a half years after the party came to power in Delhi? Listen in to know!
