Japan marked the 78th anniversary of when the United States dropped an atomic bomb on the city of Hiroshima, killing 140,000 people towards the end of World War II. Thousands of participants including Japan’s prime minister Fumio Kishida attended the ceremony on August 6, 2023. In a speech, Kishida condemned Russia’s nuclear threats and called for the abolition of nuclear weapons.
