The coronavirus pandemic has dealt a severe blow to Japan’s centuries-old geisha tradition, as the professional entertainers famed for witty conversation, beauty and art skills. While the geisha are beginning to emerge from months of lockdown, they must observe strict social-distancing rules. Covid-19 has only piled on additional pressure for the entertainers who were struggling to keep their fading traditions alive. Japan had reported 22,890 cases and 985 deaths related to Covid-19, as of July 16, 2020.
