Japanese champion runner Totomi Bitoh is training hard to become a top ultra-marathon sportswoman, but she also has dreams of one day being a mother. She says her determination to achieve those goals without compromise led to her decision to freeze her eggs. Bitoh is among a growing number of women undergoing the medical procedure in Japan as the nation struggles with a declining birth rate. The trend has grown, in part because of an initiative by the Tokyo metropolitan government that offers young women up to 300,00 yen (US$1,900) in subsidies to cover the cost of preserving their eggs.
