Tourists from India have vowed online to boycott the Maldives after three of the island nation’s ministers made disparaging remarks about Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. After Modi posted a video promoting a southern Indian island destination, the ministers responded online on January 4, 2024, with posts describing him as a “clown”, “terrorist” and “puppet of Israel”. The remarks were said to refer to India’s support of Israel in its war with Palestinian Hamas militants in the Gaza Strip.
