Authorities in India on April 19, 2023, discarded over 900 litres (240 gallons) of toxic alcohol after it killed at least 27 people in less than a week in the eastern state of Bihar. The distribution and consumption of alcohol is banned in several parts of India, including in Bihar. Initial investigations showed that poisonous methyl alcohol was mixed with the spirit. Local police have arrested 174 people in connection with the case.
