Dozens of men and women gathered at the Teppo-zu Inari Shrine in Tokyo to take part in a polar plunge for the new year. Devotees at the 68th annual Shinto ritual believe the ice bath brings well-being to the community and purifies their souls. This year, it was held as temperatures in the Japanese capital hovered at around 5 degrees Celsius (41°F).
