Possibly tens of thousands of people in Asia have been reportedly sucked into scamming rings with the promise of romance or work. Lu, an employed construction worker from China, recalled being lured into a high-paying job in Cambodia during China’s tough Covid-19 policies. On arrival, Lu was forced to create fake online profiles and scam others out of money for up to 16 hours a day.
