Proposed legislation that would give the government sweeping powers to blacklist entire countries and send some asylum seekers to jail is being scrutinised by a Senate Committee.

Sky News Political Reporter Olivia Caisley says Labor is trying to “close a loophole” for non-citizens who refuse to be deported.

Ms Caisley said early testimony heard so far from human rights groups has been “incredibly scathing” of this bill.

“They say no amount of renovation or amendments would render it acceptable.

“They’re particularly concerned around the sweeping power that it would hand the immigration minister.

“To essentially blacklist a visa application from countries that don’t accept involuntary deportation.”
