The outcome of Hong Kong’s district council elections on November 24, 2019, left the city’s pro-Beijing camp reeling from a landslide defeat. A record nearly 3 million Hongkongers turned out to cast their votes. The results from the usually uneventful local elections sent a powerful signal as the majority slipped from the pro-establishment camp to pan-democratic politicians. The results are considered a barometer of public sentiment about months of anti-government protests in the city as well as how Chief Executive Carrie Lam has handled the crisis.
