At least three Hong Kong restaurants have announced that they will not welcome mainland Chinese customers, or anyonespeaking Mandarin, the official language of the Chinese mainland. The restaurant operators cited health concerns after Hong Kong’s government fell short of fully shutting down borders between the city and the mainland amid the coronavirus epidemic. Hong Kong’s Equal Opportunities Commission has said that such measures may break laws against racial discrimination, but others argue that shops should have the right to choose who they serve.
