Fires are raging across Greece, destroying forests and gutting homes close to Athens.
The heatwave engulfing many parts of the world has not spared the Mediterranean, threatening to stoke tinderbox conditions across the region.
An estimated 61,000 people died in heatwaves in Europe last year, and public health authorities fear subsequent years will be worse.
