Former US president Donald Trump has told a group of young climate protesters to “grow up” and “go home to mummy” after they crashed his rally in Iowa on Sunday.

In Indianola, a suburb of the capital Des Moines, protesters disrupted Trump’s address, brandishing ‘Trump: Climate Criminal’ signs.

The activists were escorted out as Trump’s supporters drowned their dissent with chants of “USA! USA!” and “Trump! Trump!”.

“Thank you darling. Thank you. Thank you. That’s all right. Go home to mommy. Your mommy is waiting. Go home to mommy,” the 77-year-old told the protesters.

The rally occurred a day after a Des Moines Register/NBC News poll showed Trump leading in Iowa with 48 per cent, though down three points from the previous month.

Former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley was in second place with 20 per cent, an increase of four points, while Florida Governor DeSantis followed with 16 per cent, a decrease of three points.
