“Period poverty” and menstrual “shaming” are problems which affect millions of young women around the world, especially in poor countries where they are often deprived of basic access to healthcare and education. Kanie Siu, CEO of the Hong Kong office of Plan International, explains how the NGO empowers young men and women to overcome these forms of discrimination at the same time that it urges governments to increase awareness and resources to end gender inequity. Established in 1937, UK-based Plan International is one of the world’s leading development organisations specifically focusing on children with operations in 56 developing countries.
