Former Cypriot Foreign Minister Nikos Christodoulides has been elected as the country’s new president.
Sunday’s run-off ballot was a bitterly-contested, close-run ballot that followed an inconclusive first round of voting last weekend.
The new president had been facing off against Andreas Mavroyiannis, a chief negotiator in peace talks with Turkish Cypriots.
Priorities for the new President include the state of the Cypriot economy, irregular immigration, and the longstanding territorial dispute with Turkey.

Al Jazeera’s Paul Brennan reports.
