Nationals Senator Matt Canavan says “every man and his dog” will want to be a climate refugee after Australia’s recent immigration deal with Tuvalu.

The ‘climate refugee’ agreement will allow 280 Tuvalu immigrants a year into Australia in exchange for the island nation agreeing it would not sign any other security deals with other countries.

“They’re just using this climate paranoia to further their ends – good luck to Tuvalu,” Mr Canavan told Sky News Australia.

“We’re just gullible enough in the West to buy all this when … all the evidence and data shows that Tuvalu is actually growing.

“It’s been growing over the past couple of decades in size.”
