Former Philippine opposition senator Leila De Lima was acquitted on one of two drug charges on May 12, 2023, bringing her a step closer to freedom. De Lima has been detained since February 2017 on drug charges that she said were fabricated by former president Rodrigo Duterte to hinder her investigation into his anti-drug campaign. She remains jailed until her other drug-trafficking charge is heard in court.
