Japan has seen a record number of bear attacks in 2023, an increase blamed on changing environmental conditions that have affected the food sources of the region’s Asiatic black bears. A wildlife centre in Karuizawa, a town in the central Japanese prefecture of Nagano, has introduced a pilot project that uses dogs to control bears and keep humans as well as animals safe.
