Deforestation in Brazil’s Cerrado savannah has hit a seven-year high, surging 25 per cent year on year. An area measuring nearly 10,690 sq km (4,130 square miles), nearly as large as Lebanon, was destroyed in the 12 months through July, according to the South American nation’s government. Ecologist Mercedes Bustamante said on December 13, 2022, it is time for Brazil’s government to act on its promise to save one of the world’s most biologically diverse tropical woodlands.
