Scientists at the National University of Singapore say they have developed new technology that can generate electricity using the energy of shadows. Instead of extracting energy directly from light, as a silicon solar panel does, the new device produces energy by tapping into the voltage difference between its light and dark areas. While demonstrating the technology in late June 2020, the researchers said their shadow-effect generator could be an alternative to solar panels that could be used in crowded urban areas or in homes once developed for practical daily use.
