All schools in the UK will close this week, as the death toll from the coronavirus continues to climb. 33 people have died in the UK in the past 24 hours.

The Prime Minister said all schools will shut their doors by the end of the week and children will be at home until further notice.

There are some exceptions: the children of ‘key workers’, like NHS staff, police and delivery drivers, as well as the most vulnerable students will still be able to attend.

This academic year’s exams will not go ahead in England and Wales; a decision has yet to be made in Scotland and Northern Ireland. The Prime Minister said pupils would get the qualifications they deserved, but didn’t say how.

Meanwhile, the pound has plunged to the lowest level in 30 years, trading at $1.15. It comes as financial markets tumbled again after major stimulus plans failed to quell fears about the economic impact of the virus.

Laura Kuenssberg, Branwen Jeffreys, Faisal Islam and Hugh Pym report for the News at Ten presented by Sophie Raworth.
