Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen used her New Year’s speech on January 1, 2023, to urge Beijing to resume talks to help maintain peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait. Beijing cut off senior-level talks with the self-ruled island after Tsai came to power in 2016 and has been raising military pressure ever since. Beijing regards Taiwan as a breakaway territory to be reunited by force if necessary. Most countries, including the US, do not consider Taiwan a sovereign state. But many oppose possible attempts to take the island by force.
