China’s National People’s Congress confirmed Li Qiang as the county’s new premier on March 11, 2023, during the annual “two sessions”, becoming the country’s second-in-command behind President Xi Jinping. Li has held top roles in eastern coastal hubs, including Shanghai, with decades of experience in development and regional economic management. But perhaps more importantly, political analysts say, Li has the trust and a rapport with Xi, qualities that will be crucial in the post.
