China expelled three Wall Street Journal reporters on February 19, 2020, in apparent retaliation for an opinion article headlined “China is the real sick man of Asia”. The three reporters working in the Beijing bureau of the US publication were ordered to leave China within five days. The announcement came hours after Washington declared five Chinese state media outlets to be “foreign missions” or foreign government functionaries under Beijing’s control, a classification Beijing said was “unjustified and unacceptable”.
