China announced on March 18, 2020, that it will revoke press credentials of journalists from three American newspapers, as well as bar them from working in China’s special administrative regions of Hong Kong and Macau. The ban on The New York Times, Wall Street Journal and Washington Post came as Beijing also declared five US media outlets to be foreign government functionaries, identifying them as agencies controlled by Washington. Beijing’s response was seen as a tit-for-tat measure taken after Washington forced dozens of Chinese reporters out of the US last month.
