Having a child is a source of pride in Afghanistan, but every birth carries heavy risks, with “one woman dying every two hours” in Afghanistan, according to UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric in December 2023. Afghanistan is among the worst countries in the world for childbirth deaths, with 638 women dying in the country for every 100,000 viable births.
